Altered & Bound Book Project

Books are created with the purpose of relaying specific information/knowledge.
For this project you will take an existing found book of your choice and alter/re-contextualize it's original meaning in some way, through the manipulation of both the images and text.  You can be humorous, serious or anywhere in between.

Project parameters:
  • You must alter/recontextualize an existing book and rebind several of its pages. (minimum of 6 pages, not including covers).
  • You may re-use the covers or make new ones.
  • The book must be functional, that is to say, it must open and have a minimum of 3 functional spreads. Not including covers,  No purely sculptural books.
  • You MUST incorporate some of the existing text into your project.  You may also delete or add additional text to your work.
  • You can use any type of materials you choose, including photographs, collage, drawings, mixed media etc.
For this project you will be doing some form of binding.  You can make use of any of the bindings shown so far in class or some combination of them.
You can re-bind some altered pages, but they must be removed from original book and put into a new binding and new context/meaning.
