Artist Study with Anachronism
GENERAL RULES:
- Find 3 Relief prints by 3 different artists. You must include the name of the artist on your final drawing you choose.-No nameless artists from Esty, Pinterest, and no cartoons, anime or super heroes. There are several artists listed on Printana.
- The print must be a black & white RELIEF (woodcut, wood engraving, linocut) print. (NOT a lithograph, screen print, etching, drawing, photo etc)
- It must be high resolution & high contrast image so you can blow it up to look at details and print it off accurately.
- Bring in 3 print outs or 3 screen grabs on your phone. I will review these in class with you next week.
PROJECT PARAMETERS:
- You will copy the entire print as accurately as you can. This is an exercise in part to learn and experiment with different cutting techniques, mark making etc.
- You will also add/change some element in the original to create an anachronism.
- An anachronism is a chronological inconsistency in some arrangement, especially a juxtaposition of persons, events, objects, or customs from different periods. (Think: Starbucks coffee cup in GOT) Since it is a chronological inconsistency, there needs to be something in the image that alludes to a particular time. (For example a landscape with no references to architectural elements or people dressed from a certain time period would not be a good example to use)
- Edition size is 5 high quality prints (well printed, on good print paper, with a minimum of 1" clean & straight borders. Prints should be signed and numbered properly in pencil only. Do not use ballpoint pens or sharpies!
- For the critique: Bring in your print out of the original work. Or email me a picture of your original the day before class at: James[email protected]
