Binding Structures 

Throughout the semester, we will be exploring various book structures. These are designed to show you both a historical perspective on the development of the book as well as explore the contemporary uses and innovations within these structures.  To further explore the relationship between form, function and concept through the book.

These binding structure projects are designed to build your technical skill set in the construction and craft of the book.
Examples/Variations of the 6 types of bindings listed below will be demonstrated in class.


The following book structures total up to a 100 points:

1-Fold Books (Concertina/Accordion/Orihon) / 1 Hardcover concertina-10 points
Orihon  is a style of Japanese codex—a historic precursor to modern books—with an accordion-folded structure, which is known also as concertina binding. Based on the Tang dynasty jingzhe zhuang, or “neat-folded paper binding," this codex style was developed during the Heian period.

2-Stab Bindings/ 2 variations; one with a Stiff or hardcover -15 points

3-Pamphlet Stitch / 1 binding-5 points

4-Long stitch / 1 with stiff cover-10 points

5-Coptic Binding / 1 with minimum of 8 pages with hardcovers-30 points

6-Case Binding & French Sewing / 1-minimum of 6 signatures-30 points (Click here for demo)
