Collaborative Skull Project

PROJECT DEADLINES /
Aug 30: Introduction to Project / Handout Skull images/transparencies
Sept 6: Bring $8.00 for paper / COAT Screens / work on drawings which are due completed on Sept 11.
Sept 11: Shoot screens / dye papers / practice printing
Sept 13: THE BIG DAY / In class printing of skulls (THIS IS A ONE DAY EVENT WITH NO CHANCE TO MAKE IT UP!!!)

The Project:
This project is to get you thinking about different ways/techniques to develop & print your images.  It is also designed to get you thinking about the various possibilities and effects of overprinting, transparency and composing on the fly.  This is an in-class one day printing event.  You will prepare your screen and color prior to the selected day.  We will then do all the printing during one class period.

Each of you will be given a 11"x17" printout of a skull along with a 11"x17" transparency.
You will each also be purchasing through the print studio a sheet of each of the following papers: Thai Kozo, Arnhem 1618, Cougar White and Neenah Gray paper. (Total cost $8.00) -This will allow you to make 12 prints.

Step 1:
Each of you will be assigned some aspect of the print to develop. (Background,  skull image, skull interior) based on the selected theme/skull.
Each of you will then develop your section and shoot it onto your screen PRIOR to class. (All screens must be ready to go at the beginning of class!!!)
  • Background: Could be drawing, landscape element, pattern or a texture (photogram of lace, string leaves); cut stencil, rubbing, drawing etc.
  • Skull interior (drawing, pattern, texture)
  • Key Image: Hand drawn or cut stencil

Step 2:
Each student will also get assigned a color.  (for example: Transparent Blue, or opaque purple)- Mix this up prior to class.

Step 3:
On the selected day, each of you will bring your pre-shot screen to class along with your pre-assigned mixed color, and all your paper torn down to size.
You each will create a minimum of 8-12 prints, (22"x30") while combining multiple elements from your peers. (Each print will be different)
(You can also think about dyeing some of your paper in advance to add that little special something).

PRINTING DAY:
We will select 6-8 screens to begin with.  Working in pairs you will help each other print.  You will move around the room printing from the various designs taking into account the various considerations that are listed below.
After everyone has printed the first round of screens, we will select a second round to work with, followed by a third round if needed.
Some of the screens will be locked in printing bases, others you will have to lay down on the floor or table and screen print ala Andy Warhol style. (have a friend help hold the screen if needed).

Considerations while printing:
  • Try different combinations of elements,
  • Vary the order you print a particular element. (Sometimes you might print it first, and then on another print have it be a later element. You may print it once early on and then again later after other elements have been added.
  • Play around with what aspects you want to be dominant or have subordinate in your compositions.
  • You must include a minimum of 5 different screens on each print.

This is a ONE-DAY EVENT, there will be no chance to make up this project.
