What is a BA?
All students enter the School of Visual & Media Arts (SVMA) as BA (Bachelor of Arts) students. The BA is a 57 credit degree which gives you a broad knowledge of the various arts disciplines.
What is a BFA?
The BFA (Bachelor of Fine Arts) degree is a 75 credit degree (the first 57 are identical to the BA degree). The BFA degree in Art is a focused professional degree. It is considered an advanced undergraduate degree and has 18 more dedicated art credits than the BA. The BFA is the only degree in Art that allows a student to select an area of concentration.
IF YOU ARE APPLYING FOR THE BFA WITH AN EMPHASIS IN PRINTMAKING, MAKE SURE YOU TALK TO ME. I'D BE HAPPY TO DISCUSS YOUR PORTFOLIO AND ARTIST STATEMENT WITH YOU.
You apply for the BFA with a small portfolio of works and once accepted you would select and area/s of focus where you could further develop your portfolio. The additional credits allow you to take additional art courses at the 300 & 400 level and also fulfills your upper division general education requirements.
BFA students are not required to take the Foreign Language general education required as well.
During your final year you would also select a faculty mentor to work with and be eligible for a semi private studio to work in with other BFA graduating seniors. You would also be taking courses such as Professional Practices to help you hone your professional side of the art business.
And finally you'd be working toward your final BFA exhibition.
