ARTZ 271: Screen / Bookarts / WEEKLY SCHEDULE FALL2023
Course description:
Students will delve into the basics of printmaking while creating unique prints. Students will learn a broad range of techniques, with an emphasis on multiples, layering color, and collaboration. We will cover a both contemporary and historical approaches to the media and it's impact in culture.
Students will also learn historical book structures and their relationship to contemporary artist books with an emphasis on creating one-of-a-kind and small editioned books. Students will be introduced to a myriad of contemporary artists whose work break the notions of what a book can be. We will discuss concepts of pacing, referral, time and narrative as it relates to the book form while exploring the relationship of image/text, scale and aspects of materiality as a reflection of content. Students will learn various book structures and binding techniques including fold structures, stab, Coptic and case binding.

WK 1/
Jan 18- Introduction to course, materials and first project.
WK 2/
Jan 23- Screen basics demonstration & handout Skull print outs/transparencies.
Jan 25- Bring $8.00 for paper (Discuss papers/prep) Work on first project drawings, have transparencies for Monday.
WK 3/
Jan 30- Dye/Spray papers, shoot screens and practice pulling prints/registration
Feb 1- In class Collaborative Print Session for project 1.
WK 4/
Feb 6- Finish Printing Collaborative skulls & Intro Project 2/Cliche'- Select words (if time permits)-will now do this on Wednesday.
Feb 8- Demo: Halftones, Posterizations, CMYK (Mylar & Pin registration) & Turn in 10 Collaborative Skull prints.

Feb 13- Print Session & T-Shirt Printing
Feb 15- Review prints by various artists
WK 6/
Feb 20- President's Day Holiday- No Classes
Feb 22- Visiting Artist Brian Kelly
WK 7/
Feb 27- Project 2: Cliche' due/Critique & Intro Project 3: Indept: KRHPP.
Mar 1- Demo: Reduction / Split fountains
WK 8/
Mar 6- Intro Project 4 / Eco Printing & Demo / Give me name of Printmaker you are doing your presentation on by Wednesday, Mar 8. (Docked 1 letter grade if you don't have a name ready)
Mar 8- Eco Dyeing (Names of printmaker for presentation due to Jim today in class)

Mar 15- Presentation on a Printmaker & Buy materials if working over spring break. (Last chance to use eco dyeing materials)

Mar 29- We will be walking over to the UC Gallery to see Dagny Waltons incredible show of screenprints and talk with the Artist. Introduce Project 6: ZACC Printfest Portfolio

Apr 7- MATRIX Prints exhibition opening at ZACC

May 3- ZACC Printfest portfolio due & final mandatory class clean up.THE PRINT STUDIO WILL BE CLOSED TO PRINTING AFTER THE CLEAN UP.
WK 17/
Finals Week: We.won't be meeting, use this time to clear out your flat files, lockers and print racks, screens etc. All items must be out by noon on Monday following finals week. All materials left after that will be tossed.
