SCREEN Materials List / Spring 2025
Your lab fee covers:
Squeegees, newsprint, rag service, colored inks, ink transparent base, drawing fluid, screen filler, stencil remover, haze remover, degreasers, spray adhesive, screen coaters, cleaning materials and various printing equipment and materials in the studio. Since printmaking involves multiples, typically larger amounts of materials are consumed than for a drawing course. Every effort is made to keep your costs at a minimum, but you should still expect to pay at least as much as you would for textbooks and materials in an academic course for these additional supplies, and perhaps more.
Each student will receive the following items:
List of Required Materials:
Many of these materials you will be able to purchase at Frame of Mind (art supply store @ 1706 Brooks St), others you may choose to order online and some items you can purchase through the Print Studio. I have listed the prices for many of the items below for comparison. You may also consider getting together with a group of other students and do a group order to save money as well. (See list of suppliers at the bottom of this page).
Print Studio:
Buying materials through the print studio is purely optional and is intended for your convenience & cost saving. Items sold through the print studio include shipping & account fee's. These items may be purchased during class, so you will need to plan ahead! Not being able to get ahold of me to purchase supplies is NOT a reason to not have work done on time.

PRINTMAKING PAPERS /
When buying paper online, it often lists a GSM. What does ‘GSM’ mean? The term ‘GSM’ simply stands for ‘Grams per Square Meter and is used for measuring paper weight. Put simply, if you were to take a 1m² piece of a certain type of paper, how much would it weigh in grams? So the higher the number, the thicker the paper. For example Arnhem 1618 comes in two weights, either 245 gsm (90 lb) or 320 gsm (120 lb) By comparison Thai Kozo is 35 gsm. I sell some papers through the print studio, but if looking for additional papers / OTHER BRANDS of Paper that work great: I recommend buying from either Blick Art Materials or Talasonline.com.
Stonehenge / Rives / Arches / Somerset / Coventry In a pinch you can go to Michael's on Reserve Street and buy a 11"x14" pad of 15 sheets of Strathmore Mixed Media paper for $17.00. |

Screens & Squeegees
You can buy wood or metal squeegees from any of the sources above. (Wood is generally cheaper).
We have been using 70 Durometer (Rubber Hardness) for our shop. Length is either 14" or 16". SCREENS: Come in Aluminum or wood (Aluminum is lighter and doesn't warp due to moisture, but costs a little more.) Screens are available from a variety of the sources above. Buying several at once is cheaper due to shipping. Mesh comes in white or yellow. (Both work well) Mesh counts: 110 is good for printing Flats or bold images. 160 is a good over all mesh count for most hand drawing images and even halftones (THIS IS A GOOD COMPROMISE) 220 is good for more detail on halftones. 305 is good for fine line work or more detailed halftones |
