Course description:
Students will discuss historical book structures and their relationship to contemporary artist books with an emphasis on creating one-of-a-kind and small editioned books.   Students will be introduced to a myriad of contemporary artists whose work break the notions of what a book can be. We will discuss concepts of pacing, referral, time and narrative as it relates to the book form while exploring the relationship of image/text, scale and aspects of materiality as a reflection of content.  Students will learn various book structures and binding techniques including fold structures, stab, Coptic and case binding.  Additionally, we will delve into the basics of screen printing while creating unique prints and combining the print process with the book format.
